There is some meritocracy to it.

In Mrs. Obama's case, Americans have our first 'first lady' who has an Ivy League law degree, so there is substance with the style. I'm not female so I never did dream ...Hi Karen,
I'm not female so I never did dream of being a princess :)

Whilst it is easy to be critical of hereditary monarchies, those in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg & the UK, do for the most part, work well. They can represent the nation and leave the democratically elected politicians to get on with the day to day job of running the country. As you indicate, the cost of running a monarchy is usually more than covered by the tourist income they attract.

And as you also imply, Americans have a great desire to have their own princess. As they don't have one, they create one. She is the totally undemocratic, unelected, 'first lady'.chaplain.czhttp://www.rickyyates.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9060065456836212415.post-9941940626738329032011-02-05T09:40:52.178+01:002011-02-05T09:40:52.178+01:00Oh Karin, you made me laugh!Oh Karin, you made me laugh!Karenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12855990208488482147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9060065456836212415.post-72164552310729393942011-02-04T21:30:50.847+01:002011-02-04T21:30:50.847+01:00When I was in my naive and late teens my dream was...When I was in my naive and late teens my dream was to vacuum the floors dressed just like the lady in the Fuller Brush ads....and in case you are too young to know those ads, she wore heels and a nice dress! To me she proved that a housewife could be beautiful at her work! So, when I was about 30years old and on my hands and knees scrubbing the floor, long hair hanging in my eyes, my hubbie came in and said, "Now that is what I like to see...etc". He is lucky to be alive today! Ha, ha.

I didn't believe in Princesess, but I did believe in the Fuller Brush Ads!Karinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10581267953153114816noreply@blogger.com
