Celebrating Four Months in the Czech Republic

On March 5th, I celebrated four months in the Czech Republic. It's more fabulous than I expected! So are the people. Over my next four months I really want to concentrate on learning the language. I saw a book "Speak Czech in 30 days!" Do you think it can be done? :-)

This is a picture from the window of my flat taken on a wondrous snowy Saturday when the flakes were huge and the spirit of the day was relaxed and cozy. I love living here.

Hi Karen,
I really love your blog, especially your photographs of the many amazing buildings in Prague.

With regard to learning to speak Czech, as an English-speaking ex-pat like me, you have two disadvantages. The first is that you have to make a living & you do that by TEFL. Therefore you spend most of the day working in the medium of English. Secondly, if you do spend time with Czech people, they nearly always want to speak with you in English not Czech, so they can improve their spoken English by talking with a native speaker. They usually don't want to help you to use your few words of Czech!

With regard to book titles, I'm afraid that 'Speak Czech in 30 days' is bordering on the absurd. I started Czech lessons two weeks ago and our course book is entitled 'Czech Express' which isn't much better! Of course, it is the influence of the marketing people. They realise that a book called 'Learn to speak Czech in three years', or 'Take the very slow train journey to learn Czech', might be more accurate but would sell far fewer copies!
